LaGrange, Ga. – Best of Show winner Sarah Scarborough Swanson was among area artists recognized with awards at the October 1 opening reception for the Visual Artists Alliance of LaGrange’s (VAAL) exhibition. The Suffering Artist Gallery owner and artist submitted a graphite, Sharpie and colored pencils piece entitled “Vintage Switches and Steroviews, Looking Like a Robot’s Head.”
First place went to William G. Jackson’s acrylic on canvas entitled “The Voyeur.” Second place went to Steve Morgan’s photograph entitled “Mona Lisa,” which features an Italian chalk artist recreating the famous painting on a sidewalk. An acrylic on canvas by Thea McKay McElvy featuring African-American World War II soldiers won third place. This piece is entitled “Remembering the Wereth Eleven.”
Honorable mentions were awarded to Jeanine Bradfield, Cindy Fulks, and Ashley Stewart. Other artists receiving recognition were Mary Carroll, Steve Close, and Lori Harrell.

Most all the works are available for purchase with a percent of the proceeds going to support the education work of the museum. “Now is the time for you to support the artists who live among us and upgrade the art in your home or add to your collection,” said Al Brannon, board chairman of the art museum. “The local artists’ work is nothing short of exceptional.”
Columbus, Georgia artist Gloria Mani judged the exhibition. Mani is an acclaimed and award winning artist, art conservator and restorer. Artists featured in the VAAL exhibition are: Elizabeth Appleby, Jaasiel Barrientos, Jeanine Bradfield, Dennis Bugg, Sean Burnley, Mary Carroll, Steve Close, Terri Codlin, Jennifer Emery, Lata Fields, Cindy Fulks, Susan Kilgore Gadrix, Andie Hardage, Deanne Hardigree, Lori Harrell, William Jackson, Len Jagoda, Thea McKay McElvy, Steve Morgan, Terry Page, Keith Parmer, Randall Parmer, Whit Perry, Jesus Pineda, Nellie Ralat, Mike Riedel, William Roberts, Victoria Slagle, Ashley Stewart, Sarah Swanson, Maryse Vaillancourt-Prescott, John Vollenweider, Charlie Warner, Barbie Watts, Leah Watts, and Cathy Wiggins.
The exhibition runs through November 13. Making the exhibition possible are MGroup, Highland Park Neighborhood, Marketplace at Lafayette Square and LaGrange Pediatrics/Dr. Suzanne Schuessler. The museum is open Tuesdays-Fridays from 9 am – 5 pm and Saturdays from 1-4 pm.
