“This is a relaxing but competitive tournament in which teams and individuals will want to participate – ask any past participant and they’ll tell you it’s an event worth attending,” said Rick Wolf, director of golf at Callaway Gardens.  “This tournament, and what you get at this event, gets better each year.”

Become a part of Callaway Gardens’ 15th annual Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival, Aug. 31-Sept. 2, 2013, by joining a chase crew.  Chase crews follow balloons in flight and recover them once they’ve landed.  It’s a terrific way to get involved with your community and experience ballooning first hand.

Crews assist pilots with inflating, launching, “chasing” and packing the balloons.

A good pair of gloves and a little time are all that are needed.  In return, crew members learn about ballooning and have access to the balloon festival and all the great activities and attractions at Callaway Gardens.

There is a Balloon Glow on Friday and Sunday with set-up beginning around 7 p.m. The launches are Saturday, Sept. 1, and Sunday, Sept. 2, between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and again between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.  Some pilots will offer tethered rides and need assistance more during the day. Crew volunteers should be available at these times.

Balloons fly wherever the wind blows and usually travel five to seven miles before landing.  Chase crews maintain radio contact with a balloon pilot. Once the balloon has landed, the crew assists with retrieving a balloon and its passengers and  escorting them back to Callaway Gardens.

Approximately 150 volunteer chase crew members are needed.  Crew members must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license and be able to volunteer at the Balloon Glow on Friday night and for both flights on Saturday and Sunday.  Each balloon needs a four- or five-member crew.

If you are interested in becoming a chase crew member or if you have questions about the event, please contact Andy Brown, Callaway Gardens’ recreation director, at 706-663-5043 or at abrown@callawaygardens.com.

The Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival will be an exciting time and becoming a chase crew member is a great way help make this event safe for members of our community and successful for the thousands of visitors who will be in town to enjoy Labor Day weekend.

LaGrange Art Museum: Our Town: Art, Textile & Science

On Monday, August 19th from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at the LaGrange Art Museum, the Art Museum will introduce Troup County Public School 5th grade teachers to Our Town: Art, Textile & Science.

Conceived and developed by the Art Museum, Our Town: Art, Textile & Science Interdisciplinary Studies for 5th Grade Students is sponsored by the West Point Fund of the Community Foundation, PNC Bank, and the Callaway Foundation.  It incorporates original artworks into Georgia’s mandated 5th Grade curriculum based on the Chattahoochee Valley’s unique history and relationship to the textile industry since the late 19th century. These units offer art education to students and help to teachers in presenting required subjects creatively.

Our Town: Art, Textile & Science is a three-way collaboration between the LaGrange Art Museum, the Troup County School System and the Troup County Chamber of Commerce which began in 2011 with the National Endowment for the Arts funded, Art and History Collide, when the Museum, 5 instructors, and almost 150 5th grade students participated in the development of a proto-type for a new program.  This program enlisted local elementary school teachers to develop a single unit that utilized the Museum’s permanent holdings to incorporate arts curriculum into the state mandated 5th Grade history and social studies standard curriculum.

The unts were developed in June, in response to an RFP distributed through the public school system by four (4) 5th grade teachers and two (2) specialists.  Together, they created 5 units (one per semester, plus an alternate) easily used by 5th grade teachers from all disciplines which will be taught to students in Troup County during the 2013 – 2014 academic years and will be subsequently adapted to 4th and 3rd grade, as well as 8th grade curriculum.
