Archive for December 2013

The first 11 days of January, Callaway Gardens** will temporarily close operations to the public for a Winter Break, a timeframe with historically low visitation.  Beginning Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, admission to the Gardens will be free on weekdays* through Feb. 28.

It may be Winter but there are lots of fun things to do and see at Callaway Gardens, such as witnessing butterflies emerging and taking flight in the warm, tropical Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center and exploring the beautiful John A. Sibley Horticultural Center with gorgeous floral displays.  While visiting, get outdoors for a little exercise on one of the many walking trails or meander through the Gardens on the Discovery Bicycle Trail (bicycles are available for rent or bring your own). It’s amazing what wonders nature provides at this time of year.

For those who have visited Callaway Gardens before, free admission in January and February is one way to show our appreciation for their patronage and support of our mission of connecting man and nature.  For those who have not had the opportunity, we want to invite them at no cost on these special dates to experience and discover Callaway Gardens.

Every season provides a great reason to visit Callaway Gardens

“Expedition to Antarctica” at The Carnegie
On Friday, December 13, at 2:00PM, the Carnegie’s Armchair Travelers’ program boasts world traveler and accomplished photographer, Gordon Kilgore, as he returns to provide a rare slideshow presentation and travel commentary of his expedition to Antarctica.
Expeditions are quite different from travelling by cruise ship.  When asked, Kilgore provided the following explanation, “main line cruise lines such as Princess, Celebrity, and RCL are adding Antarctica to their South American itinerary but do their passengers really get to Antarctica?” Technically, the answer may be yes. However, there are no landings and no one gets to set foot ashore. Passengers will see the mountain ranges, perhaps a few icebergs and maybe penguins will be standing on the shore or swimming in the sea.
Should you want to go ashore and really experience the continent, however, you would have to sign up with an expedition. Most expeditions depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, then cross the Drake Passage and visit only the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Kilgore’s trip departed Littleton, NZ on January 20, 2002 and returned to Hobart, Tasmania in Australia February 12, 2002 for a total of 23 days. The trip was aboard a Russian ice breaker, the Kapitan Khlebnikov which was built in 1981 in Finland. Due to the 9/11 tragedy many people cancelled and Kilgore was able to negotiate an unbelievable fare for a cabin and was able to make what some would call, the trip of a lifetime.
The Carnegie is located at 1 LaGrange Street, downtown Newnan on the historic Courthouse square.  To reserve your spot for this program, call 770-683-1347.
