Thirty artists in studios across Fayette and Coweta counties will be showcasing their talents and techniques, answering questions and selling their art during the 5th Annual Southern Hands Artist Studio Tour (SHAST). Visitors will get a rare glimpse behind-the-scenes, see demonstrations and, at many of the artist’s studios, be able to try their hand at creating a work of art.

In past years visitors from Marietta, Tallapoosa, LaGrange, Carrollton, Vinings, Woodstock and many other locations around Georgia have traveled to South Metro Atlanta to see the artist’s studios, learn about the process and buy unique art from the artists they have met.

The variety of art covers the spectrum to include painting, fused glass, weaving, fiber art, ceramics, jewelry, woodturning, blacksmithing, photography and mixed media. Information on each artist is available on the SHAST website.

SHAST was started in Fayette County by local ceramic artist Andrea Boswell to educate those curious about the creative process and to inspire future artists. Each year it has grown and improved thanks to her creative leadership. This year another local ceramic artist, Janet McGregor Dunn, was handed the reins. SHAST is run entirely by volunteer artists with all of those on the tour working to ensure the best possible experience for visitors.

A number of new and exciting changes have been made this year:

·         Attendance is free.
·         Fine Lines Art and Framing and The Boyd Gallery will be giving away gift-certificates valued at $25 or $50 each on the SHAST Facebook page, artstudiotourga. Those wishing to participate and win should simply “like” the SHAST Facebook page and watch for information. The certificates can be used at any SHAST artist’s studio during the tour through the end of November.
·         SHAST expanded this year to include artists from Coweta County.
·         Artwork by SHAST artists is now available on Facebook for purchase year-round at facebook.com/groups/shastart/
·         The public can keep up with all things SHAST by signing up for SHAST Blasts on SHASTour.com

Newnan Art Depot will be hosting an artist reception on Saturday, November 4th, from 5 – 8 p.m. Additionally, SHAST artist’s work will be available for sale throughout the month of October at the Art Depot. Visit the Art Depot 30 E Washington St, Newnan, GA 30263 or online, NewnanArtDepot.com.

SHAST is held the 2nd weekend in November each year. Visitors are provided with addresses for all the artists or may print a map available on the SHAST website. Guests may start at any studio. Along with art, information and fun, guests can enjoy a variety of refreshments at each studio.

Numerous local businesses support SHAST through generous donations. Brent Scarbrough Company, Piedmont Insurance, The Town of Turin, Amy Byers Agency, Joan Velsmid and Sherry Stone Blackmon REALTORS, Crain Oil, Christopher Brothers Land Surveying, Fine Lines Art and Framing, The Boyd Gallery, The Newnan Art Depot, and Corner Arts Gallery are just a few who companies supporting the arts in Fayette and Coweta.

To learn more about SHAST visit the new, updated website, www.SHASTour.com, follow along on Twitter, @shastga, Facebook, artstudiotourga, or sign up for SHAST Blasts on the website.

“We launched the ExploreGeorgia.org Songwriter Series last year as a component of our ‘Year of Georgia Music’ promotional campaign, but it generated so much enthusiasm that we decided to bring it back to six new cities this year,” said Kevin Langston, deputy commissioner for tourism at the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

“These intimate performances give audiences an opportunity to experience homegrown artists sharing the stage, playing off one another and spotlighting their songs and the stories behind them.”

Callaway Resort & Gardens will host the 15th annual Ida Cason Callaway Foundation (ICCF) Golf Tournament Friday, Sept. 29, 2017.  Proceeds from the tournament, co-title sponsored by Callaway Golf® and Odyssey Golf®, enable the ICCF to share the wonders of nature with thousands of schoolchildren by providing funds for diverse environmental programs available at the Gardens.

This tournament celebrates the great spirit of the Gardens’ founder, Cason J. Callaway, who believed that golf should be a pleasant experience in beautiful surroundings as well as a fun way to introduce children to nature.

“If you are looking for a great afternoon of golf, food, entertainment and enjoying a beautiful Fall day in nature, find your team and sign up.  This is a relaxing but competitive tournament in which teams and individuals will want to participate – ask any past participant and they’ll tell you it’s an event worth attending,” said Wyatt Detmer, director of golf at Callaway.

Teams will receive a bevy of goods with entry into this can’t-miss event:

* Competition round on your choice of Mountain View or Lake View courses, plus a Thursday or Saturday bonus round
* $200 Callaway Golf Gift Package per player
*  Pre-round Skills Challenge on Twin Oaks Practice Facility
* Lunch on the driving range
* Closest-to-the-pin contests, great door prizes and raffle
* Access to demo clubs, TrackMan® launch monitor session and the Callaway Golf® Merchandise Tent
* Awards ceremony and reception
* Complimentary beverage cart during round

Teams will compete in a scramble on either the challenging Mountain View Course, 12 time site of the PGA Tour’s® Buick Challenge, or the more scenic Lake View Course.

Proceeds from the event go to the biggest winners:  the students who receive the opportunity to experience the educational and horticultural programs of the Gardens.  In addition to a host of programs and initiatives, the not-for-profit foundation hosts more than 30,000 schoolchildren in the Gardens each year, provides internships for college students and supports Callaway’s acclaimed Birds of Prey program.

Tournament day registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a luncheon to follow.  Shotgun starts on both the Mountain View and Lake View courses will begin at 1 p.m.

Registration fee is $1,200 per four-person team. This event will fill up fast so sign up today – CLICK HERE for registration form or contact Sandy McKeen at 1.844.227.6073 or smckeen@callawaygardens.com.

Taylor 2

Modern American Dance

Tuesday, September 19, 7:00 pm

Paul Taylor established Taylor 2 in 1993 to ensure that his works could be seen by audiences all over the world, unhindered by economic or technical limitations. Mr. Taylor worked with longtime colleague Linda Hodes to create a company that could accommodate performance requests as well as teaches and provides community outreach. Mr. Taylor looked back to the 1954 origins of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for the structure of his new company: six professionals with a particular gift for his style who perform his work throughout the world.
